Grant plus optional equity for a single company scaling a high-risk innovation, one of the few EU instruments with no consortium requirement.
The EIC Accelerator funds a single company: no consortium, no partners, no three-country rule. It targets a start-up or small firm with a high-risk, high-potential innovation that private investors will not fund alone, typically moving from technology readiness level 5 or 6 towards 8 or 9.
It offers a grant of up to €2.5 million for the development work, and separately an equity investment through the EIC Fund of roughly €0.5 million to €15 million for the scale-up. A company may take the grant alone, the investment alone, or both. The blended option is the reason the instrument exists, and it means the EU can end up on your cap table.
The process runs in three steps. A short application can be submitted at any time and is assessed continuously. Those that pass are invited to submit a full application against fixed cut-off dates. Those that pass that are interviewed in person by a jury of investors and entrepreneurs, which is a very different exercise from writing a proposal.
Success rates are brutal: a few per cent of those who start, and the interview stage rejects a large share of the proposals that reached it. Preparing properly costs months of founder time, which is the real price of applying and the reason to be honest about fit before starting.
What the jury is testing is not the science. It is whether the market is real, whether the team can execute, and whether public money is genuinely needed rather than merely welcome. A technically outstanding application with a soft commercial case fails here reliably, and that is by design.
| SME definition | The EU's formal test: fewer than 250 staff, and either turnover up to €50M or a balance sheet up to €43M. | |
| Technology Readiness Level (TRL) | A one-to-nine scale of maturity, from an observed basic principle (1) to a system proven in operation (9). | |
| Two-stage submission | A procedure where a short proposal is evaluated first, and only those that pass are invited to submit in full. | |
| Co-financing | The part of the project cost you must cover yourself, from your own resources. |
