BIRAC

BIRAC (the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) is a public sector enterprise set up under the Department of Biotechnology to move biotechnology out of institutes and into companies. It funds ventures rather than laboratories, and it is India's principal publisher of biotech calls.

Its schemes form a ladder. Early ideation grants for a founder with a concept, larger grants for proving a product, partnership funding for work approaching market, and equity-adjacent instruments beyond that. An Indian biotech venture's first public money is very often BIRAC's, and the later rungs are designed to be climbed by the same companies.

Applicants are generally required to be Indian-registered entities, frequently with conditions on Indian ownership and on where the work is carried out. Foreign involvement is normally as a partner to an Indian company rather than as an applicant.

It publishes in ROUNDS rather than continuously. A batch of calls opens, runs for a few weeks, and closes; the listing then keeps the closed round visible alongside earlier ones. Reading the page by title rather than by date gives a badly wrong impression of what is open.

Bemzu reads that page nightly, so an empty India means the current round has closed rather than that the source has broken. The next round appears the night it is published, which is the point of watching a source that is quiet most of the time.
