BIG (Biotechnology Ignition Grant)

BIG (the Biotechnology Ignition Grant) is BIRAC's entry point: early-stage money for an idea that has not yet become a product, aimed at founders, start-ups and researchers with something to prove rather than a business to scale.

The ticket is small by European standards and the application is correspondingly short. In character it sits much closer to cascade funding under a Horizon project than to a framework programme proposal: a few pages, a defined technical milestone, a decision in weeks rather than a year.

It runs as calls in rounds, several times a year, with a defined project duration measured in months rather than years. The expectation is a demonstrable technical result at the end, not a research programme.

It is administered through a network of partner incubators and institutions rather than centrally, so the practical experience depends substantially on which host an applicant works with. That relationship is worth investigating before applying, because the host provides the mentoring and the infrastructure as well as the administration.

For an Indian venture it is the most common first public money, and its real value is often the validation rather than the amount. A completed BIG project is the credential that makes the next application, public or private, materially easier.
